Will's Favourite Bird

My Grandson Will has a favourite bird ... or so I discovered when we were at the Zoo last Sunday. He is totally fascinated with Peacocks.

So ... being the doting and spoiling Grandpa that I am ... guess what I am looking for ... :-) Does anyone who reads this blog have some pea chicks for sale? ... or eggs?. It would be fun for the Silkies to hatch out a few peacocks for us ... ;-)

Life is good.

Bill, I'd be worried about the predators you have there. It would be a shame for Will to have his "own" peacocks only to have the heartbreak of losing them. They CAN fly, so that would help, I would think. And maybe their obnoxiously loud calls would scare off a coy-wolf! hee

they were always my favorites too. I used to raise them.

I lived with 9 of them for several years. As Michelle mentioned they are quite loud; rather like a banshee scream. They tend to wander...often very far (a friend w/a farm near town was finally asked to get rid of his after three years of them traveling the mile to town and walking down the middle of Main St). They will fly into trees which helps their safety...and lay eggs off branches, no kidding, lol. They always reminded me of very large, not nearly as bright (!?) Guineas.

Elegant birds, I can see why Will loves them. I was once told that Peacocks do learn from foster mothers....perhaps your Silkies could tame some of the wanderlust?

Kind of a cold time of year for baby chicks, Bill. You might wanna wait for spring and until you solve your coyote problems.

They are kinda fun though. I prefer the more rustic guinea fowl myself.

I have friends with a dozen or so peafowl and she has a hard time persuading them to come inside in winter, they prefer to sleep in the rafters of the hayshed, but have a habit of freezing to death out there. When the females lay eggs on the ground and sit on them they are sitting ducks, so to speak, for predators.

Any chance you have an old corn crib lying around? They make excellent peafowl pens :) And don't forget all the lovely colors that are available nowadays :) We have 2 white, an opal and a pied. They're a lot of fun, but yeah, can be loud :) We sell tail feathers at the chicken swaps and either hatch eggs and sell chicks or sell eggs. Males *can* become agressive, but I"ve never had a bad one.

I worked at a sighthound kennel for a number of years and they had about 17 peafowl and chicks every year. I still cringe when I think about the noise. You may need to bribe your neighbours :-).
